Haudi!

Veidi uuemat Ameerika kolledži slängi:

tailgating – drinking beer before an American football game, usually around 09:00 in the morning.. Still have trouble understanding this custom.

tailgating (saba väravastamine) – veider Ameerika harjumus alustada õlle joomisega enne Ameerika jalgpallimängu, s.o. tavaliselt kuskil kella üheksa paiku hommikul. Täna hommikul üks punt sabaväravastunud tegelasi äratas mu oma huilgamisega.

Freshman 15

Commonly new students gain 15 pounds during their first year. Potential causes are buffet tables in the dining halls and drinking beer..

Uutel üliõpilastel USAs on kombeks esimesel aastal (freshman year) 15 naela (ca. 7 kg) juurde võtta. Loomulikult aitab selleks kaasa ülikooli kämpuse sööklasüsteem, kus saab alati süüa nii palju kui süda lustib. Ameeriklaste kehakaalust kirjutan pea pikemalt … olge lainel 😉

enne / before                   ->               2 nädalat / 2 weeks ->            pärast / after

Näide Freshman 15’st on omast käest võtta. Leidsin selle tüsenenud isendi oma toast.

Northwestern University

7 kommentaari

Tere! Salut!

Northwestern University is the school where I am spending this academic year and where the academic year just kicked off. To enforce school identity and bring people, purple is chosen here as school colour and everybody is encouraged to wear it as often as possible. The campus also has two identity landmarks – the Rock and the Arch. During the ceremony of beginning of the year – the convocation-, everybody had to walk through the Arch and scream like wildcats (school symbol). Happy parents and friends all over taking photos and smiling – freshmen (first year students in US) happy to start their academic life.

A punch of students freshmen and exchange from Malaysia, Serbia, France, Israel, Turkey and Estonia proud in front of the Arch (top left corner).

Through the arch, students from the class of 2014 on their towards the meadow where the ceremony is about to take place.

And the final ceremony on a meadow – all about purple.

PS!  I have got five free t-shirts so far, 3 purple and 2 other colors. Vivat!

Academic love!

Chicago

7 kommentaari

First day of visiting Chicago. A city full of verticality. Nice weather. City full of skyscrapers and Americans and americanity. Here is a short overview from the two main sights in Chicago.

The Bean

A landmark of Chicago. A statue where vanity and good design meet in harmony. Most of you should be acquinted with the fat guy floating around the reflection on the bottom of the bean.

yay, dude!

Sears (Willis) tower

Built in 1974, it was the tallest building in the world for 25 years. The weather was perfectly clear and we had a magnificent view over Chicago.

I almost fell from the tower.

Love you all!

PS! I hope noone is opposed to me posting in English. It just seemed the easiest way to make the blog accessible to friends from Estonia and Sciences Po.

Tervitused!

Olen veetnud esimesed kaks päeva rahvusvaheliste tudengite sissejuhatusprogrammist. Sukeldun ameerika kolledžielu ja kõnepruugi eripäradesse. Rahvusvaheliste tudengite sissejuhatusprogramm on mõeldud peamiselt Aasiast tulnud esmakursuslastele, keda on kokku sadakond.

Uued postitused on tulemas!

Legomees ründab uuel lainel Chicagost / Lego bonhomme à l’attaque de Chicago

leave a comment »

A Fresch Beginning! yes, presicely fresch for the german origins of Chicago.

Stay tuned!
