Hancock Center

875 N Michigan Avenue, Chicago in fog. When erected in 1968, it used to be the tallest building in the world outside of New York. Now it remains the fourth-tallest in Chicago.

Sailing team

with one comment

Ja minu selle suve unistused purjetamisest on tõeks saanud – liitusin Northwesterni purjemeeskonnaga.

I joined the sailing team and am very happy about it. Now to all my European friends who are wondering how on earth is it possible to sail in Evanston and Chicago, we sail on lake Michigan. It is the third biggest lake of the Grand Lakes with a surface of 58’000 km2, which makes it 16 times bigger than dear lake Peipus. It truely feels like a sea.

Novice as I am, learning this new  sport is very exciting and enjoyable. The sailing team is a lovely family with a rich social life and the sailing itself is rendered even more pleasant thanks to the gorgeous view on the glass and steal sticks of Chicago aiming at the sky.

As Chicago is not exactly  a tropic paradise, the wind blows pretty strong and can freeze your toes off. Hence sailing here is a bit like a space mission – we dress up in drysuits which only leave the hands and the head out.

Last weekend was the last sailing event of the season – a regatta at the Chicago Yacht Club where we had a marvellous view on Chicago from the lake.

Autumn (Fall) on campus

2 kommentaari

Autumn or should I say Fall has been pretty and enduring. Surprisingly, it still is quite warm and the temperature went below 0 °C only this week. The fallen leaves all over campus where very tempting. Juhhei, lehtedesse kümblema, hurraaaa!

la mia bicicletta nuova

3 kommentaari

Bought a bicycle today from a bicycle recycle place called the recyclery. It’s a 1971 Schwinn called the suburban and it was made in Chicago when there still was a Schwinn factory in Chicago. Reminds me of my good old Tartu friend Terässiipi. It cost me $85 and hopefully we will become good friends.

Overall, I am surprised by the number of bicycles on campus, the bicycle parking lots look like in the Netherlands or Denmark.

Halloween

leave a comment »

Hard work and nice time kept this post delayed. Anyway, last weekend I celebrated Halloween at Wisconsin-Madison. Despite some detours the ride was enjoyable and playing padidle ended dramatically for my attire.

Amazed by the number of people who actually dressed up, I got into some trouble for people-watching.
